Tribulations of socks

Not planning on making a long-winded introductory post. The more you read, the more you learn!

So, hello!

Lately I’ve had a touch of bad luck on the knitting front. Perhaps it’s my bad habit of never deciding to swatch. Perhaps it’s the fact that my poor size ten feet combined with my love of knitting socks makes for a lot of socks in “women’s medium”.

Take Exhibit A: Jaywalkers. Knit from Cherry Tree Hill Supersock in Fall Foliage, awesome colourway.

Got this far, and then finished the gussets. But no… it wouldn’t fit past my huge, over-wide ball of a foot and tall ankle.

Cue flailing, whining, and eventually frogging. Sad. So sad. But I overcame. Kudos to Grumperina, who wrote her sock pattern in two sizes!

Second time was a charm. It fit.

However, I was a little frustrated at the sock. Not at the pattern, or the yarn, or Grumperina herself. Just the sock in general. I needed a break before moving on to the second Jaywalker.

Being my spontaneous self, I decided to go against my better judgement and blindly start on Cookie A’s lovely Monkey sock, clearly sized for “Women’s Medium”.

The yarn is pretty, stretchy Meilenweit Megaboots Stretch. The pattern is beautiful, simple and fun to knit. But guess what?

Same spot as Jaywalkers. Couldn’t get my foot through the ankle.

Cue breathing, counting to ten, realizing that hey, this pattern is easily edited to add an extra stitch on either side. It’s OK. It hasn’t topped me yet.

But until I re-start sock, I’ve decided to start on some baby things, as there is a new neice or nephew on the way, very soon. Any suggestions towards cool baby patterns (and I mean cool – my sib is no slouch on the geek-coolness) are much appreciated.
